The smile that tasted like the sea again

António Guerreiro is 68 years old and lives in Olhos de Água, a few minutes from Albufeira, in a white house facing the sea. For more than four decades, he was a master builder. He built houses, restored old houses and roofs, and taught young apprentices to “listen” to the history of the walls before touching them. He always had strong hands and an easy laugh. He was known in the village café for the stories he told in the late afternoon, almost always accompanied by loud laughter. But in recent years, António has stopped laughing like that.

The progressive loss of teeth began discreetly. First one molar, then another. Then came the infections, the removable dentures, the constant discomfort. “It’s just old age,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. But it wasn’t just old age. It was the embarrassment of smiling in photos with his grandchildren. It was the excessive care in choosing food, nothing too hard, nothing that could dislodge his dentures. It was the fear of speaking in public at the yacht club where he has been sailing for over 20 years.

António always found balance at sea. On Saturdays, at the marina, he helped prepare the club’s cruising sailboat. He checked the ropes, aligned the sails, and felt the wind before he even saw it. He knew that, in sailing, everything depends on the right adjustment.

But lately, he avoided being at the bow when photos were taken, spoke less, and laughed with his mouth closed. He felt, in a way, out of alignment, like a sail that no longer catches the wind as it should.

It was his daughter, a nurse in Loulé, who told him about the All-on-4 technique. She explained that it was possible to restore a complete arch with just four strategically placed implants, and that a fixed prosthesis could be delivered on the same day. António turned up his nose. “That’s for younger people,” he replied. But his daughter insisted: “Dad, it’s never too late to feel good again.”

The first consultation at Algarve Dental Implants was different from what she had imagined. She found no rush and no empty promises. She found someone who listened. Dr Cris Piessens, with over 30 years of experience in implantology, explained the process calmly and in detail. He showed you the 3D images, told you about the technique’s predictability, and the possibility of leaving on the same day with fixed, stable, functional teeth. He also talked to you about trust.

António left the clinic thinking about something the Doctor had said to him: “Just like a house, teeth can also be rebuilt on solid foundations.”

On the day of the surgery, he arrived at 8 a.m., feeling nervous. The team welcomed him calmly and cheerfully. Conscious sedation helped him get through the procedure with peace of mind. When, at the end of the afternoon, he looked at himself in the mirror with his new smile, he was speechless. It wasn’t just aesthetics. It was firmness. It was confidence. It was him, but improved, like an old house restored with respect for its history.

The adjustment was easier than he had feared. He began eating apples again without fear. He began ordering whole grilled fish at restaurants again. He began laughing again without covering his mouth. But the most memorable moment came weeks later, on his youngest granddaughter’s birthday. As he blew out the candles with her, someone took a photograph. António was in the centre, smiling openly and brightly. His wife, Maria, looked at the picture and said, emotionally, ‘It’s you again.’

Today, António continues to go to the marina whenever the wind promises. He continues to help prepare the sailboat, adjust the sails, and feel the sea as he always has. He continues to share stories after the regattas and give his opinion at club meetings. But there is something different about him. He speaks with more confidence. He smiles more often. And when someone comments on his new smile, he replies without hesitation: ‘It was the best decision I’ve made in recent years.’

For those who live with doubts, fear or resignation, António offers some simple advice: ‘Don’t confuse ageing with giving up.’ Age is not a barrier to regaining quality of life. The All-on-4 technique gave him back teeth he can call his own, the pleasure of eating, self-esteem in photographs, and the carefree joy of laughing out loud.

Because, like the sea he loves so much, there are things that never lose their strength.
